P.N.F. “Classic”: Missions

Battlegroup confrontation

Your carriers fleet has run into a major enemy force. Both aim their guns and launch their aircraft at an alarming rate!

Objective

Win the mission by destroying all enemy ships in the nearby fleet. Your mission fails if your carrier is sunk.

Strategy tips

Attacking major ships (carrier / battleships) is easier if their escorts do not block approach routes with AA and AAA fire so try to sink them first.

When attacking the major ships try to time so that other aircraft of your side are also attacking, this will prevent all AA and AAA batteries concentrating on your aircraft.

Sitting duck

Your carrier has been damaged and its fleet has moved on to fight elsewhere. Slowed down, smoking she’s now a sitting duck for the enemy destroyer patrol approaching.

Objective

Complete the mission by destroying all enemy ships approaching; thereby preventing the carrier from being sunk. Mission fails if the carrier sinks.

Strategy tips

Attack the leading ships (those closest to the carrier) first. Note that you can strafe the ships using the cannon in addition to throwing bombs (useful for finishing off after a few bomb hits). Bomb reload and repairs can be picked up by doing a flyby low over the carrier deck. Plan your bombing runs so that you only fly over the target (not over other ships as well as their AA defense will find you!).

Tank invasion

Tank battle on a island. Your side is on the defense while the enemy is launching a major offensive; tanks are moving on from the north-west and mid-east side of the island. Only limited defense forces are available and they are bound to be overrun if without air support.

Objective

Prevent the incoming tank battalion from breaking through the defense line. Mission fails if they succeed in capturing a compound by blasting away all 3 depots at a compound. Mission complete if enemy tank force is diminished to a level where it no longer poses a threat to defending forces.

Strategy tips

Do not attack enemy tanks to close to their depots at the start of the mission (the depots are defended by long range AA and AAA). Use bombs placed well to take out multiple tanks with a single blast. Once you spot a mobile AA, take out that first. If you see a hole in the defense line keep an eye out for tanks breaking through and firing at your compound; if this happens take them out immediately to prevent losing the round.

Island conquer

Both enemy and friendly forces occupy compounds and battle is imminent. Both sides will launch attacks sending tanks out to capture compounds from the enemy (once all 3 depots have been destroyed a compound is rebuild by the capturing force, introducing additional tanks for that side).

Objective

Take control of all compounds on the island.

Strategy tips

Fly low over friendly compound to repair and reload. Assist the troops by bombing tanks and intercepting enemy air raids before they do damage.

Bombing enemy tank depots is a quick way of capturing a compound without losing too much tanks, but keep an eye out on the battlefield situation.

Always use the nearest by friendly compound for bomb reloads. A offensive attitude will make more progress then only defending against incoming attacks.

When encountering enemy fighters do not let them lure you into their compounds exposing you to ground-fire.

Sink the Yamato / North Carolina

Your carrier is shadowing a enemy battleship. Your commanders are set on sinking the major enemy asset.

Objective

Complete the mission by sinking the enemy battleship directly by bombing and/or supporting friendly forces in destroying the battleship.

Strategy tips

Attack any enemy fighters that are spotted: once the skies are in control the carrier will launch torpedo bombers. Attack the escorts of the battleship first: it will clear the approach routes for the torpedo bombers.

When possible, load bombs and catch up with the torpedo bombers at full speed – bomb the battleship and create a diversion for the enemy AA and AAA to distract from the approaching torpedo bombers.

Keep an eye out for enemy forces being called in by the battleship trying to escape, if left unattended they may well sink your carrier!

Guard

The carrier has escort duty: a convoy of freighters is bringing weapons supplies to the troops. A number of destroyers will flank the convoy to assist.

Objective

Survive as long as possible preventing the freighters and carrier from being destroyed. Mission is lost if all freighters or the carrier are sunk.

Strategy tips

Concentrate on keeping the carrier alive. Try to estimate which enemy forces will be dealt with by other aircraft from the carrier (it will send out patrol fighters and bomber missions if enemy shipping is spotted). Prevent being drawn out too far chasing enemy forces who are retreating as likely they are just a diversion for other forces approaching (keep an eye on the radio reports!).
