P.N.F. “Classic” – Manual

NOTE: on 1st game start (selecting ‘PLAY’) the flight controls neutral position is re-defined (by orientation of your device).  To re-calibrate the orientation sensors mid-game use the ‘back’ button (left arrow) on your device to access the ‘pause’ menu.

Game start

Depending on the game selected you start mid-air or at a aircraft carrier.

When starting on the carrier wait until the elevator brings your aircraft to the flight deck. Then press the ‘FIRE’ button to launch your aircraft.

Flight control

Use the ‘speed’ lever on the left lower corner to control speed by sliding it into the desired position and then release (do not hold the control). Rotate your device front-back, left-right for pitch and roll control. Notice that pitch/roll and max speed are influenced by carrying bombs. Turn rate decreases as you fly slower.

View control

The aircraft can be viewed externally or from cockpit by pressing the cockpit button on the right. Note that for straffe or air-to-air fighting cockpit view is best because of the crosshairs for aiming. For bombing external view is best because of the bomb-impact point indicator shown on the ground.

Weapons

By default you will have guns selected as the active weapon, and the weapon indicator (above the FIRE button) will show a crosshair. Press the crosshair to switch to bombs or torpedo (can only have either bombs or torpedo loaded at a time).

Loading weapons

Weapon choice is only available on missions where you start from a carrier. Before launching press the weapon status panel (left hand side above throttle) to switch between bombs or torpedo. Torpedoes are not available on all missions.

Reloading weapons

Once torpdedo is dropped or all bombs have been dropped, fly over a friendly compound or flagship (indicated by the flag above the unit) to reload. Before reloading press the weapon status panel (left above throttle) to switch between bomb or torpedo selection.

Dropping bombs

In bombing mode it’s best to use external view so it’s possible to see the bomb impact point indicator (red circle with dot in center on ground). Consider the following things when bombing:

  • Higher altitude means less accurate the bomb impact point.
  • The harder the plane turns the less accurate the bomb impact point.
  • Account for movement of the target.
  • Pressing fire wildly moves the phone, controlling the aircraft (easily moving the impact point indicator of the target).
  • Approaching ships from their broadside makes for a very slim target.
  • Dive-bombing from medium altitude best aim with a bit of practice.

Dropping torpedo

Torpedo can only be dropped if flying level and low enough. If in correct position both of the torpedo segments in the weapon status panel will be lit bright green. The torpedo has limited range and will run out of steam after a while. Consider the following the dropping a torpedo:

  • ‘Lead the target’, a ship will move significantly before the torpedo reaches it.
  • Hitting a ship head on or from the stern is extremely hard.
  • Some ships will zig-zag to evade a torpedo.
  • A missed torpedo can go past its target and hit a friendly ship, so aim away from friendly vessels.
  • Keep an eye on that altimeter, easy to splash into the ocean in the heat of the moment.

Damage

As flak and machine gun fire damages the aircraft it will start to leave a smoke / fire trail. If the plane has too much damage it will crash without control. The oil meter is a guage for the amount of damage.

Repairing

Fly low over the carrier or a friendly compound to reload weapons and repair any damage. In some missions there will be multiple fleets / squads with flagships indicated by a flag overhead. Those position can also be used to reload / repair. Additional reload/repair points are compounds on islands that are under control of the side you are fighting for.

Indicators

Meters

On the left 3 meters are present: a altimeter, oil gauge and compass.

The altimeter can assist in preventing from crashing into the ground when flying close to the earth (for example when strafing or dropping a torpedo).

The oil-gauge indicates the health of your aircraft, once it reaches the 12′ position in the red zone you will lose all engine power and eventually crash.

The compass shows the direction the plane is flying in. This can be usefull for orienting on the airfield if a air-support request comes in.

Intel / Radio messages

During flight flashing messages will be superimposed on the game screen to notify you of reports by friendly forces. These messages are important, they may include critical information like enemy forces attacking your carrier, mission objectives or calls for help by friendly forces.

Side indicators

Compounds: Above compounds on the islands a transparent IFF flag is displayed to indicate which side has hold of the compound.

Ships: For each fleet a transparent IFF flag is displayed above it’s flagship to indicate which side the ships belong to.

Enemy aircraft indicators

Enemy aircraft are marked with red circles to aid in finding your enemies when playing on a small screen. Enemy (torpedo) bombers that have your carrier as their target are marked by red circles with cross-hairs to highlight the threat to your home carrier.

Air raid siren

When enemy (torpedo) bombers with your carrier as their target are airborne every 15 seconds a air-raid siren will sound (accompanied by a message indicating the threat).
